Students who enroll in the Plan during the fall open enrollment will have the corresponding fall semester charge added to their student account within 10 days. The corresponding spring semester charge will be added to their student account in January.

Students with a qualifying life event (QLE) may be eligible to enroll in the Plan outside of open enrollment periods. A qualifying life event is a change in life circumstances that allows you to sign up for a new insurance plan, outside of open enrollment periods. Without a qualifying event, you would need to wait until the next open enrollment period before making any changes. Examples of a QLE: newborn, marriage, loss of coverage, entering the US, court order.

Standard Insurance Rates are for gross annual premium, and the rates applicable to most students. The premium is billed to the student's account in two installments: one in the fall, and one in the spring. The student may utilize any available payment mechanisms and plans offered by the Bursar's Office to pay for insurance.

If enrolled in the fall, coverage begins 8/1/2024 and ends 7/31/2025. If enrolled in the spring, coverage begins 1/1/2025 and ends 7/31/2025.

For GAs, RAs, and TAs with a 10-hour or more assistantship, the cost of the Virginia Tech Student Medical Insurance Plan is subsidized at 88%. The Subsidy Rates indicate the portion of premiums that is the student's responsibility. 

The premium is billed to the student's account in two installments: one in the fall, and one in the spring. The student may utilize any available payment mechanisms and plans offered by the Bursar's Office to pay for insurance.

The University contribution to premiums is collected from the University through Payroll, and will appear on the student's pay stub and year end W-2. The per pay period contribution is $184.46.

Enrollment of dependents requires student enrollment. Student enrollment in the Medical Plan is billed through the student's account with the Bursar's Office.

Dependent enrollment is made directly with Aetna, and the amounts listed below paid directly to Aetna. You will have the option to pay the total premium in full or pay the premium in two installments. If you choose the installment option, please note that enrollment is for an annual plan, and mid-year termination is not possible.

Enrollment in the Aetna Medical Plan is required for enrollment in the Dental Plan. The cost of student enrollment in the Medical Plan is not included in the amounts below. The cost of student enrollment can be found in the Standard and GA/GTA/GRA Rates, and are billed to the student account with the Bursar's Office. 

Enrollment in the Dental Plan is made directly with Aetna, and the amounts listed below paid directly to Aetna.
